[Morocco Diaries - 1987 p2] [Morocco Diaries - 1987 p46]

September 20th until 26th we stayed in the Tarifa area and tried to reacclimatize to western culture. We went windsurfing almost every day in light to medium winds, finished our last bottle of Rioja, found out that these Portuguese tin cans, that we had carried with us as emergency food reserve all the time had an absolutely not eatable content, got chased from our overnight place by the Guardia Civil (just one time) but all in all felt a bit bored after the intense experiences in Morocco.
The bus clearly had been a bit worn by Moroccan roads and I was forced into a succession of repairs. First I fixed a hole in the exhaust pipe with the tin of the before mentioned Portuguese cans (this repair lasted until I had to scrap the bus a year later). Then I had to do maintenance on the carburettor, that had a few loose screws and electric connections. The next day we ran out of gas very quick – it summed up to a consumption of 20 litres per 100km – and the engine was stuttering all the time, obviously sucking air. I found out that the bleed screw at the float chamber had fallen off and the fuel was just spattering out with the odd flame shooting through the engine compartment. Luckily I found the screw lying on the sheet underneath the engine and could fix that. We didn´t have much money left and wouldn´t have been able to afford any mechanics and / or a 20 litres per 100km fuel consumption.

September 27th we hit the road on the inland route, avoiding costly motorways. Tajomar, Plasencia and Reinosa were some of the stops on the two day trip to the Basque Country, where we spent the night at Playa Laga.
