From the campground I had to cycle a few kilometres along the Ring Road up to the pass east of Grindavik, from where I took off on one of the gravel roads leading into the Reykjanes Geo Park. There were – as usual – no signs giving any orientation and so it was trial and error and rough guessing of directions with the help of the sun.

The tracks consisted of loose gravel and were running though the volcanic hills in and constant up and down. It was a strenuous ride through a landscape sometimes resembling more a Sahara dessert if not even a Martian one than anything you would expect on an island close to the arctic circle.

The reward was a barren but colourful and hypnotic landscape that I passed in total solitude. A landscape that you could easily get lost in due to the trance-like state induced by the physical exercise in combination with the otherworldly surrounding. The winding tracks didn´t help either to stay orientated and before I got completely lost – and to avoid a gruelling ascent via a steep track up a sandy hill – I decided to turn back after about an hour of cycling into the vast and labyrinthically inland. On the way back I took off onto an unknown path which seemed to lead into the right direction and actually made it back to the ring road without too many detours.
