Monday August 7th
I awoke to a nice sunny and warm – in Icelandic standards – day. The swell forecast was once again promising only tiny waves, but the wind was favourable here and so I drove to the south side of town with the faint hope of finding something rideable. But once again I could only hint the potential of that beach. Maybe with a good-sized south-westerly swell and a north westerly wind….
So, I hit the road again and drove back down south. This time I would take the tunnel underneath the fjord for a big shortcut. On the way I made a brief stop at one of the typical churches just before the tunnel entrance. That place looked neat and it was sitting at a very exposed part of the coastline and there is always hope – which once again got disappointed.
A little bit later I drove underneath the fjord on the expressway to Reykjavik and past the city to the northern tip of the Reykjanes peninsula. I stopped at Garšur on the east facing part of the peninsula. I didn´t expect waves at this coast but the fancy small harbour caught my attention. I parked my van and climbed the wall to have a look at the sea, which looked churning despite the lack of wind and swell.
