Now the bright sunshine and extremely clear air intensified the colours of this volcanic landscape. This applied to the green of the vegetation, the blue of the Kleifarvatn inland and the sea to the south, the ochre and black of the volcanic soil and rocks and the yellow and red and white of the minerals at the thermal hotspots. And the icing on the cake were the steam clouds evaporating at the hot spots.

Yes, they were distributing a nasty stench and it would take hours until the odour would dissolve from my clothes and from the van, but the otherworldly scenery is usually worth the nuisance. I took my time to absorb this magic with all my senses before I returned to the van and drove to Grindavik to spend the night on the local campground.

I had already spent a couple of days on this campground which is well equipped and perfectly situated right in front of the harbour. Thanks to the camping card that I had purchased on the ferry to Iceland I only had to pay a small basic fee and the – admittedly extremely high – costs for electricity (which I often didn´t need to buy thanks to the solar panel on the roof of my van).
