Ice-EP12-13h

Up at the pass the combination of the fog and the icy wind made for such a barren surrounding that I didn´t even stop for a look and continued driving down to the Hrútafjörður, a narrow body of water cutting deep into the coastal mountains. Down there it was windy and grey but at least there was no fog. I made a quick stop at Hvammstangi, a small village with a fishing harbour, and then headed further northeast along the Ring Road.

After a while I reached the vast wetlands at a bay called Húnafjörður. The wide beach with its inlets was – like so often on Iceland – inaccessible for me as there were no roads leading down there. But the Vatnsdalur and the surrounding mountain ranges inland looked interesting and so I made a little detour into the valley along a gravel road. I entered a fascinating landscape consisting of a lush green valley with the river and a few lakes and the odd pseudo-craters which I already knew from the south coast – framed by dark black mountain flanks. A few farms were spread along the valley and most of the flat area along the river was used to herd cattle.

Very nice and perfect for a short pause from driving, but my mission was to scout the coast in search of potential surf spots.
