Thursday, August 17th started with a mix of clouds and sun and a strong northerly wind. I walked down to the town and northward along the coast to see if there was any potential for surf. It was flat despite the strong wind. Obviously, there was a big west swell needed for any waves breaking here. A north swell would be even better but the distance to Greenland was too small for any proper swell from this direction being created. It nevertheless was a nice place which I earmarked for having another look at.
Around noon I started the van and ventured out for some further exploration of the area. A few kilometres south of Skagaströnd I turned left and followed the windy road up through a valley to a forlorn plateau framed by high mountains. After about half an hour I had crossed the base of the peninsula and the road dove down to the Skagafjörđur, offering a fantastic view on the fjord and the mountain range on its east side.
The last kilometre down to the fjord was difficult to drive as the panorama and the windblown sea kept distracting me. So, I almost ran into a flock of sheep approaching me on the wrong side of the road just before it entered the outskirts of Sauđárkrókur.
