The already dramatic and hallucinating character of this black and green wilderness is additionally enhanced by the almost vertical icefields of the Hvannadalshnúkur glacier tongue breaking through the upper mountain range.
The panorama visible from the parking is already stunning, but there are even better views when you follow a path across the plain and along the river coming down from the glacier through a steep canyon. We decided to walk a bit closer despite the rain. Once we reached the foot of the mountains the left side of my trousers was already soaking wet due to the stiff southerly wind and a constant drizzle.
Probably due to the lack of surf and the long hours of driving we all felt the need to burn some energy, so we decided to follow a footpath leading up through a cirque to a ridge right in front of the glacier. The footpath soon vanished but we kept climbing through a mix of rocks and moss. The rain was pouring now, and the climb became increasingly steep, but the ridge seemed too close to turn round. Like so often there was a ridge behind the ridge but we didn´t give up and after a much longer climb than expected finally reached the peak.
