It starts with the ever stunning – even with bad lighting - Reykjanes Geo Park that we passed driving on the coast road from Grindavík to Þorlákshöfn. The following about 80 kilometres through the plains past Hella are boring – very boring in Icelandic standards – until you reach the first extensions of the coastal glaciers, the infamous ice-capped Eyjafjallajökull volcano. As we wanted to get to the Höfn area in the southeast with some daylight left, I was very selective in where to stop along this coast littered with stunning landscapes.
Still, the drive along the ring road alone stunned my companions. I allowed a short stop at the Skógafoss but otherwise continued past the Mýrdalsjökull and through the amazing Skeiðarársandur until we reached Svinafellsjokull glacier. Here we stopped for a short walk to the glacier lake and the tongue.
Next - and because it lays just besides the ring road inevitable – stop was the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. The weather was brilliant now, very calm and with plenty of sunshine and very mild temperatures. My companions were stunned as expected whereas I was only slightly impressed. I probably had seen this place too often now. Instead, the windless weather only spiked my desire to get to the next accessible beach. I had faint hopes that we would find some leftover swell there.
