Still, the visit of my mates more and more seemed doomed surf-wise, and they only managed to get an idea of the local surf potential without having a chance to take the slightest advantage. Soon it got too cold out in the lineup despite the constant paddling, and we returned to the shore but not without getting the special feeling of having to pass the minefield of slippery boulders with numb feet.
We decided to do some more sightseeing in the area and headed west. On the way I took off the main road to a better exposed part of the coast, but as expected, the onshore wind was messing the waves.
Next destination was Hafnaberg at the west-facing part of the Reykjanes peninsula. This area is very active volcanically and the coast has some interesting lava formations. It also is a geothermal hotspot which Iceland takes advantage of with a large geothermal power plant. This isn´t a completely risk-free natural energy source though, as the surrounding area illustrates, an area that very much looks like a WW I battlefield. The forces of nature are strong here, sometimes too strong for humans and their buildings.
