Like so often on this island the fantastic landscape made me forget my original task, which for this day – as for most days - had been to surf a few waves. The long days in mid-summer – the sun sort of sets as late as around midnight – reduce the possibility of having to chose between conflicting interests though. Knowing that you still can paddle out for a two-hours surf session at ten in the evening allows even the heavily surf-addicted to do some inland exploration in a relaxed mood.
So, back down at the parking I drove back to the coast with surfing in mind but after a few kilometres on the coast road decided to make another little detour. A gravel road was turning off here, leading up the lava hills to the south side of the volcanic mountain range that I had climbed from Seitun.
The road sign warned that this road required off-road vehicles, but I nevertheless gave it a try. It passed a for the area typical moss-covered lava field along some cliffs and the succession of clouds and the rays of the low standing sun in between gave this strange landscape a fascinating illumination.
