Back on the main road I avoided more side-stops and headed straight east. From Selfoss eastwards the ring road crosses a large plain which is quite boring for Icelandic standards. Things only get interesting again once you reach the Markarfljót, a river fed by the mighty Eyjafjallajökull glacier which begins at the beautiful Þórsmörk valley and heads southwest until it reaches the sea in a wide estuary just in front of the Vestmannaeyjar islands.

The ring road crosses the estuary with a long bridge. It is already hard to keep your eyes on the road without getting too much distracted by the view on the river and gets even more difficult the closer you get to the mountains south of the estuary.  Here the plain ends abruptly at the mostly vertical rock walls bordering the infamous Eyjafjallajökull glacier.

Just a stone´s throw away from the ring road, a large waterfall – one of the many waterfalls along the mountain walls, but a particular impressive one – starts to dominate the view. The cliff from where it drops from faces straight south and the evening light soaked the cliffs and the falling waters with a golden light.
