Monday, July 24th

I woke up late and still a bit exhausted from the long drive and many impressions of yesterday. The weather had completely changed and now it was grey and cool and drizzly. I drove back to the Ring road and headed further south. Vík í Mýrdal at the southernmost tip of the island was my next destination. According to the travel guide this was one of the most scenic parts of the island.

The weather forecast had prognosed a south-easterly wind and some wind swell, so once I reached Vik, I passed it and drove straight to the Reynisdrangar beach which also happens to be a tourist highlight due to the cliffs and the strange rock needles out at sea. Down at the beach there was a huge parking and a so-called visitor centre which mainly consisted of an overpriced cafeteria. The parking was half full, but this already meant lots of people down at the beach consisting of black sand and pebble.

I walked down to the beach and to the cliffs. It was nice down there, but to be honest, I had expected more after all these enthusiastic reports and praising. Sure, the hexagonal magma rock formations with hexagonal pillars and stucco like roofs, all in a deep shimmering black were exceptional. And the black rock needles sticking out of the sea just in front of the beach also are an interesting geological oddity, with the huge population of sea beards breeding on them the icing on the cake.
