It was really scary and sort of panicked and started to run away. My flight only provoked more attacks until I finally was far enough away from the no-go zone that they probably drew around their nest. I stopped panting from the run and looked back. They were still circling above the restricted part of the cliff and watched me, sometimes coming a bit closer as to reassure me that I better not returned.
I continued my walk along the cliff edge staying alerted as I was fully aware that the cliffs were hosting innumerable bird nests but managed to reach the top of the cliff without getting attacked again. From up here I had a fantastic overview onto the vast black sand beach stretching until the horizon west of the cliff and to the mountains and glaciers inland.
On the way back, I had to pass the Arctic Tern´s territory again. Coming down the hill I saw some other hikers passing the no-go area and naturally getting attacked by the bird couple. I was sure that I would get attacked too when passing the birds again and prepared my camera. I wanted to capture the attack on photo to give proof of my story. A little bit anxious I walked down and there they were again. I sheltered my head with one arm and tried to take photos with the other hand but couldn´t resist long before I was running for shelter again. Even with knowing that these were (supposed to be) faint attacks it was too vicious to keep the nerve and stand still to take some proper photos.
