After a couple of minutes driving further south the mighty glacier coming down to the Breidarlon lagoon was too tempting and I left the Ring road again. To my relief the parking at the visitor centre was almost empty. Due to the lack of wind it was very warm and walking up the end moraine felt almost like central European summer.
The view from the top of the moraine onto the lagoon and the glittering glacier was majestic. Aside from the odd cracking coming from the glacier tongue it was absolutely silent. I walked a bit along the moraine and sat down at the lagoon shore and took my time to soak in the scenery.
Further south from here began – for me – unknown territory. The road was still following the narrow coastal plain with more commanding mountains and glaciers to the right and a mix of black sands and green hills in front of the blue sea to the left with. So, the general pattern stayed the same, but the details were constantly changing according to the particular volcanic and glacial activity that had shaped the landscape. It was the exact opposite of boring and once there was an opportunity to stop beside the road, I used it.
