The sun was still hanging above the horizon when I passed La Spezia. There was hope. And I was lucky because again there were no traffic jams. Shortly after I left the motorway and headed for the “marble fortress”. A bit of zig-zagging and 15 minutes later I reached the beach promenade. The sun was just above the horizon. But not much above anymore. I parked the van near and hastily headed to the pier, a bit stiff from the long drive.
The wind must have fallen asleep just recently, as the waves were still not clean. But there was swell. And there were quite a few locals out having an evening surf session. I now had given up the idea to have one myself, as the sun had disappeared behind the horizon. Getting back to the van and into the wetsuit, waxing the longboard and walking back to the bridge would probably take as long as it would take to get completely dark. So, I stayed on the pier, enjoyed the almost psychedelic colors of the sunset without being too disappointed. The following day would be good.
Soon it was completely dark and went back to the van to drive a few kilometers south to the next pier, where I found an official camping car parking to spend the night. 20 Euros per night is far from a bargain for a parking lot with nothing else then a tap but at least the electricity was included. And I didn´t want to spend the night parking somewhere along the boardwalk at the surrounding streets I had something to eat and went to sleep early.
