The sandbar to the north seemed to milk a fairly juicy right out of the tiny swell and a bunch of guys on small boards were having a last blast. The wave south of the pier was less juicy but still could please a group of longboarders. All this was beautifully lit by the setting sun and just a perfectly fitting end to a wonderful late autumn day of surfing the Mediterranean Sea.

It was one of these days where I barely find time to eat so I was quite hungry. A short drive to the town center of Viareggio brought relieve in a restaurant. Re-energized I was ready for the one-hour drive to Livorno where my ferry to Corsica would depart the following morning. As I had time I decided to avoid motorway fees and drove on the country road following the ancient Via Aurelia. The road had even more deteriorated since the last time I was in the area and once I reached Pisa I had enough of the pothole torture and took the motorway for the last few kilometers.

Once in Livorno it was the usual odyssey to get to the ferry port. The best way to manage this is to follow the signs to the harbor without getting discouraged by driving at least two complete 360-degree circles. Switch off your brain and just follow the (tiny) signs and you will eventually reach the port.
