The road is very windy from here on and I soon was very unnerved by the constant beep of the controls (which canīt be switched off), so once I reached the serpentines leading down to Vivario and the central inland valley, I took the first opportunity to stop my van at a small parking at one of the curves.
I soaked in the majestic scenery of the snow-capped mountains in the background and the classic Corsican mountain village in front of it. This soothed my nerves sufficiently to continue driving. I restarted the van and to my big surprise there were no more engine failure warnings. Despite the following many ups and downs of the narrow road and endless succession of curves the alarm stayed quiet and the engine was running ok.
I nevertheless didnīt dare to stop anymore until I finally reached the lagoon south of Bastia shortly before it got dark. As all campgrounds on Corsica are closed during this time of the year, I choose a beach parking to spend the night. I had a beer and some noodles with nice sea view and went to bed early.
Thursday, December 14th
I got up way before dawn, had a quick coffee and – quite anxious – started the van. The engine sprang immediately to live and there was no failure warning. Good. This meant that I had been overly cautious in my time schedule, but I rather had it this way.
