Still, it was classic storm surf, with a lot of paddling and duck-diving and very few waves giving you reward for all that work in the icy cold howling wind. I couldn´t convince myself paddling out into the stormy sea as I still favour windsurfing when it blows strong enough.
So, I walked back but soon realized that the wind was still too strong for a 4.5 sail (at least for me weighting currently about 75 kilograms). This was a real pity as the waves had even improved with the lasting storm and I cursed myself for not having bought a smaller sail yet despite having had the same problem in Sardinia. I checked the forecast, but it showed no sign of the wind backing off. To the contrary, it was due to howl with storm force all day and the following day too.
I had to make a decision and decided to play the motorsport game and drive further west in the hope of either finding some more protected bays for a surf on the way to Le Lavandou. There are a couple of bays I stopped, beginning with the Debarquement beach, then Cavalaire and Rayol plus a few more besides the road, but each of them was too protected for the east swell to produce significant waves or too exposed to the wind to make it worth paddling out on a surfboard.
