Getaway-52h

Friday, January 1st it was rainy all day and all we could do was another walk up the hill. But that rain was the harbinger of some more weather action on the Mediterranean Sea and so I took it coolly and anticipation.

Saturday, January 2nd, I left early and headed east. The forecast had promised a good 2-meter wind swell from the east in combination with north- to north-westerly winds. It was overcast and cold. The usual suspect spots along the northern part of the bay of Saint Tropez were all flat. I kept driving around the cape and to the east facing beach which usually gets the best out of these short-range east swells. It was surprisingly small, not even close to what the forecast had predicted and – aside from two boogie boarders – empty. But it was surfable and so I went out.

Turned out, that my timing was quite good though. Just when I reached the lineup, the swell arrived. Set waves were around shoulder-high as forecasted and the wind was a light side-offshore. For a while it was just me and a handful of other surfers out, but that did change soon. It was no surprise, that every surfer in the wider vicinity would wand to capitalize on conditions like this, which are rare and most of the times do not last long.
