As the engine was properly running (it´s a Diesel) I kept decided to keep driving and only made sure to stop at the next gas station to fill up the tank while the battery was still string enough to restart the van. As you have to keep the lights on even during daylight in Denmark the only thing I could do to spare electric energy was switching the radio off.
A quick calculation gave me hope to make it at least to the German border until it would get dark. But from here on it was another 2 hours until home and I was sceptical if there would be enough battery energy left to have enough light for the remaining distance. So, I made it over the border but soon the light was getting very weak, which became an increasing hazard as there was quite a bit of traffic.
About 30 kilometres south of the boarder I gave up and pulled into a rest area, where I spent the night. To my great relieve the battery was strong enough to start the engine the next morning and I drove directly to the office where I spent the day working with a grin despite knowing that I would have to spent money on repairing the van again. But that two-and-a-half-day trip had been good – most important – had brought back the joy of surfing after that long abstinent time. It also brought back the hunger for more.
