The waves breaking now, albeit being far from spectacular, were exactly what I had come for. Due to the light offshore, it was very clean, and the lefts were quite long running fun waves. I mentally prepared to slip into my still wet and very cold wetsuit again, when I spotted about 20 people in wetsuits and coloured lycra shirts coming to the beach, most of them with softboards under their arms. Then I spotted the Cold Hawaii Surf School bus on a parking further down.
That was the final spoiler of my already queasy surfing day. I mean, these guys are the locals, and they have every right to surf their home-breaks the way they want, especially as they were obviously having plenty of fun. But their habit of entering the lineup in big numbers and spreading all over the area, thus making every set wave ride a slalom around numerous obstacles is already difficult to handle for everybody else. Even more spoiling is, that at least a third of them doesn´t care about surf etiquette and paddles in huge numbers for any wave totally oblivious to priority rules or surfers already up and riding. In having their special kind of fun, they ruined that break at least for me.
