We experienced the same effect during our trip – but this was not entirely negative. On the contrary, we experienced a period with surprisingly strong winds. Usually, on Sal, you would expect to sail on your biggest sails during wintertime, and you would not bring any smaller than a 4,8qm sail. But, during our first week, we painfully missed our 4,0, which we had not even brought along. The wind was howling, and in addition, we enjoyed some days with decent size shorebreak waves in front of the windsurfing centers, which we used to train our aerial and Goiter skills.

After playing around at our new home spot for a couple of days, we started to travel around the island, in search of the more famous waves. But instead of “normal”, the swell direction shifted slightly to the Northeast, which unfortunately meant that the really good breaks like Ponta Preta, Ali Baba, Cural Joul and Tras Leao („Secret Spot“) did not really come to life.

On our first attempt, we still found about 2m waves at Secret Spot, but the shorebreak was already crowded with a whole bunch of Italian sailors, who swallowed a lot of white water due to the fading winds, and who had to exit over the sharp reef, which is covered over and over with sea urchins.
