On our second attempt, the swell had almost completely backed off, and all the famous wave sailing spots seemed to be almost as “scary” as Sotavento beach on Fuerteventura. Nice, but not really what we were looking for. Even at Ponta Preta, the Atlantic Ocean looked more like a pond then like a proper ocean. Strange things happen…
Luckily, we still had a couple of nice sessions. Day by day, Santa Maria bay delivered some waves at least, and offered really good Freestyle and Freeride conditions. Even former world champion Josh Angulo himself destroyed a couple of waves right in front of his windsurfing center, and raced through the bay with his brand new slalom gear. Josh is still on fire, he is fast, twice as fast as any normal windsurfer, and he still attacks the waves more radical than anyone else. It really was a pleasure to watch him life and to share a few sessions with him.
Also, we still were lucky enough to catch a nice session in Canoa – the easiest wave sailing spot on the island, which still can deliver at least a few fun waves in smaller swells, which are breaking on a soft reef a little further out than usual. Exit and entry are relatively easy here, and while most other wave sailing spots on Sal are rather demanding and tricky, the wave in Canoa is pretty soft, and also suits less experienced wave sailors.
