All other wave spots require a lot of self-confidence and very good timing skills, as you will usually find pretty sharp reefs, sea urchins everywhere, powerful waves, light and gusty winds on the inside, and a lot of spiky rocks wherever you go. You really have to put in some effort to conquer the waves on Sal, and sometimes you will also have to pay your tribute.
If you happen to break your mast or board, you will probably forget the most cited phrase on the islands around: “Cabo Verde – no stress man”. Most of the wave sailing spots are really demanding, and there is not always a safe exit downwind, except for Canoa. Enjoy & good luck!
Due to the non-favorable swell direction, we spent most of our time in Ponta Leme in Santa Maria bay, where we enjoyed nice conditions day by day. Unfortunately, we could not sail the world-class breaks, which we wanted to discover. Even our gear remained undamaged, and we “had to”, or rather “could” take everything back home again. No doubt, this has saved us some money, but the dream to ride the waves in Ponta Preta remains a dream for us, at least for the time being.
But eventually, this has a positive side effect – we still have good reasons to come back again rather sooner than later, because we still have not tasted the full potential that Sal has to offer.
