While Chris, Max and Elena decided to rent equipment for the trip, we simply tested our luck at the Check In desk on the airport, and were really lucky this time. All our bags were checked in and arrived without any damage – but after this experience we knew, that the anticipated empty waves and beaches would probably remain a part of our daydream instead of turning into reality…
Well, in the end, it turned out to be better than we feared. February really is peak season for Sal, at least by Cabo Verde standards, even if it is outside the main holiday season. Luckily, most of the numerous kite boarders stay on the “Kite Beach”, a few kilometers to the north from Santa Maria.
Windsurfers are more or less on their own at Ponta Leme, the southern beach and main windsurfing spot of Santa Maria. Due to this it never got too crowded on the water, even if we counted around 60 kites in the sky at Kite Beach, and at least the same number of windsurfers hunting for waves in Santa Maria.
