The main beach in Santa Maria really offers a nice combination of flatwater and waves. Right in front of Pezi Huber’s and Josh Angulo’s windsurfing centers, you may face an impressive shorebreak and side-offshore winds. This combination allows for excellent down-the-line riding with a couple of good sections for aerials and Goiters. The wind is pretty gusty though, and it is a little tricky to catch the waves here. And, once you managed to land your aerials in front of the waves, there is not a lot of water left before you would eventually end up on the rocky beach.
Thus, most sailors stay further upwind, where you’ll find a beautiful freeride spot with a couple of nice yet non-dangerous waves peeling around the point, which offer easy wave sailing conditions, especially for wave novices, who want to manage the first steps to becoming a wave sailor. Further out, at Ponta Leme, the waves may quickly increase to 2-3 meters, and call for a couple of jumps and decent wave rides. Yet, they still remain easy and comfortable to sail without being too dangerous if you stay away from the rocky beach.
And outside of the water? Well, just as it is more crowded on the water, compared to Sao Vicente for example, the night life and restaurant choice also has quite a bit more to offer. There is a good variety of local seafood restaurants, Pizza places and even American sports bars.
