The amount of surfers at the reef surprised me. I didnīt expect to see such a large crowd on a weekday morning. Christabal’s low frequency pulse lead to strange situations as a large pack of guys on shortboards was frantically paddling to find position in an absolutely flat sea. But the sets kept coming in in clockwork like reliability and the resulting waves were slightly but continuously growing in size. The swell was still just arriving.
The peak to right also had its moments but only a small group of longboarders was hanging around here. They didnīt regret their decision paddling away from the masses. A bit mushy but well sized and long running rights and lefts were their reward.
Meanwhile the sun had disappeared and the wind was slowly turning back south. Grey skies are the signal for photographers to drop the camera and paddle out themselves. I decided to join the hordes at the reef and tried to get one of the rights at the beginning. But these were the favourites of the majority of the other guys out too and the combination of a current dragging slowly but constantly to the north and the still pretty long lulls made positioning and getting one of the rights pretty difficult.
So I concentrated on the lefts that were less popular but still offered a steep drop and a wall for a few turns. A few waves later the southerly wind got too strong and I went back to the beach.
I had a well needed coffee and then went to Klitmoeller to get some bread and have a more extensive breakfast.
