It didnīt even give me a good feeling as there is just so much plastic waste around here that you could spend a whole day and would only be able to clean a tiny part of the beach. And this is Denmark, a well-developed country and a rural area without any badly managed waste dumps or large industrial sites anywhere near. The vast majority of the trash comes from the North Sea.

On the way back to the van I specialized on collecting fish net remnants and again it took me just a few minutes until I had collected more than I could carry. I dragged these lines and nets for about a kilometre to the parking and into the trash containers there. On the way I got very angry about this once very appreciated profession. Seems like a lot of fishermen have a tendency to shit into their own garden, be it about oposing fishing quotas or throwing damaged nets and other trash into the sea.

But asides from fishermen, everybody else should think twice before buying for example cheese with a plastic layer in between every slice and an oversized plastic packing. If you donīt want microplastic to become your and your childrenīs major nutrition a fundamental re-think of your own consumer habits would be a first step. Voting for political parties who really are ready to face the plastic industry lobby might help too or at least pressure your local representative to act. Otherwise it will take us centuries to clean up the mess.

Collecting trash from the beach might look like a nice action but in reality is just a placebo to appease your conscience. There has to be done much more and very quickly.
