Sometimes swell and wind and sandbar merged into perfect synchronisation and produced some pretty good waves. But. No but. You have to be realistic. These were some of the best conditions you could ask for at this part of the North Sea. We have to be grateful that the west coast has such a reliable sandbar – which exists since a couple of years now – that works with variable swell directions and can handle a sideshore wind. This is no implicitness at this storm-battered volatile coast.

And the good thing with offshore, well at least side-offshore winds is that often other options pop up. You just have to walk a bit further. Back at the base camp the parking had filled up with non-surfing visitors too who just came to enjoy the sunshine and the view of the agitated North Sea. The quiet autumn scenery got stirred up a bit when a bus arrived and something like thirty kids in their early teens swarmed out to the beach. That spook lasted for about half an hour before they returned to their party bus and left to shake some other place.

In the late afternoon the wind dropped a bit – the swell was still pumping – and a few clouds began to obscure the low hanging sun. Temperatures immediately dropped significantly from an already low level and with sunset it became freezing cold. I retreated to my van, switched on the heating and the oven to cook some noodles, hoping that the combined warmth of both gas driven devices would soon turn the frosty inside of the van into a cosy lounge.

But the heating repeatedly switched itself off, a reliable sign that the gas bottle was nearly empty. An increasing easterly wind and a few hail showers outside didn´t make things more comfortable inside the van either. But the worst thing would be no morning coffee the other day due to no more gas, so I switched the heating off, had my noodles, put on an extra layer of clothes and went to bed early.
