It had become overcast when I reached Bilbao. I managed to take exactly the right exit and when I reached the end of the tunnel I was right in town centre and immediately found the Guggenheim. Perfect navigation without any navigational systems (I am travelling still old school with maps made out of paper). The only problem now was – as expected – to find a parking place for my van. As the development of the city had gone further since the last time I was here, the only parking close to the museum that was suited for my van had been replaced by a large new building.

I tried to find something in the more industrialized parts down the river but took a wrong turn and suddenly was on the way back to the motorway. It took a while for the next exit and I had to find my way back to the centre through an obscure suburb. Finally back in the centre I found an unoccupied parking space but didn´t manage to convince the fee machine to give me a parking ticket. So I drove on, with growing frustration and a growing urge to take a pee. Back at the river I found another free parking, stopped the van and first of all went to a café to relieve myself. Back on the street I tried to get a ticket from the machine again and finally understood that I had to enter my licence number to get the ticket. Happy about having managed to buy the parking ticket I started the short walk along the river to the museum.

Continue here for the story without having to look at all these Guggenheim pics

or

take a little detour with some more impressions from the Guggenheim.
