Tuesday morning I got up at 6, had a coffee and went for a first check. It had started to rain during the night and the wind had turned southwest as predicted. The onshore wind was nothing that really worried me at the moment. Same with the swell that despite already showing some energy in its low frequent pulse was still too small to light up the reef of Punta Galea.  According to the forecast the peak of the swell should arrive at noon and last the rest of the day. The wind was predicted to turn south to south-east in the afternoon.

So there was time to do a little bit of exploring and as soon as the rain backed off I grabbed my bicycle followed the cycling road along the coast to Getxo. Getxo originally was a small fishing village (named Algorta) in a rural area but has been swallowed by the greater Bilbao urbanisation and the harbour since quite a while. Punta Galea currently marks the outer limits of this community with still growing gated communities for the wealthier ones.

The town centre consists of the for this area typical late seventies building blocks scattered over a couple of hills which leads to a pretty steep up and down of the roads. At some point they even installed an escalator to make walking in the city a bit easier. I lost a little bit of orientation in the city and the steep ascents pushed my pulse to strenuous heights a few times before I finally reached the shores of the Ria.

From there it was easy to cycle to the main attraction of the city, the Viscaya Bridge, the world’s oldest transporter bridge.
