Essaouira: Beautiful large half-moon shaped bay at the southern border of the city. In general free-ride conditions with very constant wid, sometimes with small waves at the southernmost end of the bay. Best spot for beginners and intermediates. Perfect infrastructure with accommodation from simple to luxury right behind the beach.
Moulay Bouzerktum: THE wave sailing spot in the region. The wave breaks as a right above a flat reef that falls almost completely dry during low tide. Works best 2 – 3 hours before and above high tide. The reef is not very sharp but has a few ugly holes for you to stumble into or threaten your mast. During outrunning tide you have to be a bit careful. But the reef also gives the waves a very good shape and makes them calculable. The predominant trade winds come side-shore from the right ant this combination makes the spot a real gem for wave-riding and jumping. During low tide there is an alternative a little bit upwind that can be easily reached with 2 – 3 tacks. The break can get very challenging during bigger swells but during summer there is usually just 1 m waves and therefore easy sailing.
Aside from these three spots there is probably more, but you need a 4WD and a lot of adventure spirit to go on the search. For example there is rumours about the potential of the dirt track following the coast for about 70 km south of Sidi Kaouki. But the first crossing of the Oued (dry river bed) at the southern end of the beach might already break the axle of your car…..
