It finally got to Kiel well after midnight, where I met Flo, and finally we could start loading my gear into his van. I was completely done with the day and fell asleep almost immediately, while Flo was heading even further north, towards the Danish border and towards Hanstholm. We arrived in on the beach in Middles around 05.00 am, and strong gusts were shaking the van heavily while we crawled into our sleeping bags. Despite the long drive, we got up early and before sunrise, in order to breathe… everything but fresh salty air when we opened the door.

The famous fish factory, upwind from Middles, creates a very bad taste in the air, which takes some time to get used to. At the same time, the smell on the beach indicates that the wind direction is perfect for Middles, and while the sky slowly brightened up, we could clearly see the first nice waves breaking outside, in the dark. We hit the water well before breakfast, with beautiful morning light in the rising sun.

In the early morning light, it also became apparent, that
Hanstholm had turned into some kind of a suburb of Hamburg and Kiel on this weekend. But due to the decent size of the waves, pretty strong currents and somewhat light winds, it never got crowded on the water. In those beautiful wobble and ride conditions, everyone had to make his way walking upwind on the beach after every few rides on the beautiful and clean faces of the waves.
