A little later the path led into the town and into narrow streets between four story buildings in the typical architecture and colours. This was almost too much of Italian cliché but – again thanks to the off season – the town was not flooded by hordes of tourists. It was a real pleasure to stroll through this pirate net in quietness and have an Espresso in one of the small bars. To avoid the long and strenuous walk back to Monterosso I decided to take the train.

The railway is another engineering masterpiece running directly along the coast in an endless succession of tunnels with the odd fantastic but spectacular view on the sea. The railway station in Vernazze is 60% inside the tunnel with just about 20 meters of the platform outside in the daylight. I reached it just before sunset and had a last check of the swell. It was still there, a little bit smaller maybe and with a little less wind. The waves were breaking a bit better organized now but it got dark soon and I decided to leave.

The forecast for the next day looked quite nice for the Tuscan beaches and this is where I went. About an hour later I reached my destination, the still deserted holiday villages north of Viareggio and looked for a quiet place to park my van and spend the night.
