The guy from the bar started to put out the tables and chairs and warmed up the coffee machine. A few elderly people were already sitting on the benches and enjoyed the warm sunrays. More and more younger people were entering the lineup. Back on the beach promenade boardwalks were filling up too. I went back to my van, was happy of not having scored a parking ticket (parking is not free here even during the off-season) and drove north.
When I reached the marina a few minutes later the wind had turned onshore and started to pick up force. Waves were a complete mess soon. I took a little rest and had some food and then decided to do another little drive further north to check another pier.
Parking was not free here either. Maybe they needed the extra money to refinance the marble curbs of the boardwalks in this town. They probably needed this extravaganza to compensate an inferiority complex because their pier was by far the smallest along this 10 kilometres stretch of beach and Bagni. The close proximity of the famous marble mining and processing town of Carrara might have played a role too, especially as Carrara has its own marina. Another reason might be that the just have to build marble boardwalks when your town is named Forte dei Marmi (translates into marble fortress).
