The Grande Finale was now nicely lit by the setting sun and her reflections on the clouds. What an incredible day. I do not know if it is like this more often or if I just lucked into a special day. Fact is: the forecast wasn´t that hilarious and looked more like a mediocre wind-swell meeting some favorable local winds. But what I know now is that at least this playground can transform swells like this into some excellent waves.

But these waves demanded a pretty high skill level and decent fitness to be surfed. And since I was suffering from a nasty infection in my jaw and ear since I crossed the border to Italy three days ago I was definitely not able to paddle out myself. It was now three days that I could barely eat and this added to the weakness that the infection already caused to my body. So I was restricted to just watch, but it was still a pleasure to soak up the visual impressions of this combination of stunning mountains, Italian culture and amazing waves.

I left Varazze after sunset. I had to drive to Nice now to pick up my wife from the airport for a long planned stay at the Cote d´ Azur. She would arrive early in the afternoon so I speculated of maybe scoring a few hours in the morning with the remnants of the swell. My plan was to drive near enough to the airport to reach it with not more than an hour of driving.

I thought Ventimillia at the Italian – French border might be a good place for a quick morning session.
