The rain had backed off now and the odd rays of sunshine made it through the clouds. I decided to drive back to Scarborough. With the rising tide, I wanted to have a look at town to see how the bays dealt with the unleashed elements. When I reached the town, I took the road down to North Bay. At the roundabout close to the beach, I realized that the coastal road was closed. I parked the car at the swimming pool parking and walked down to get to the beach. Walking down I saw a massive set rolling into the bay. It was the biggest I had ever seen at the North Sea.
Down at the promenade the shops had sheltered their windows with steel panels and sand sacks. A couple of cars were still parked along the road and got regularly showered with saltwater. The wind had backed off a bit and the outside waves were impressive, but due to the high tide the waves at the inside were just a wild chaos of backwash and freaky foam spits. A good spectacle though and I watched for a while until another shower came and poured a mix of hail and rain on me.
I returned back to the car and drove to South Bay. Coming down the road I could see that the Sea was already very far up and the odd wave splashed onto the promenade. But being the leeward side of the swell it was mainly the high sea level that posed a thread but not the waves. They were breaking further outside in the bay and they were pretty big out there.
