Back in Scarborough I left the main road to have a look at South Cliff in the last light. From up there one has a perfect overview on South Bay. The tide was at its highest point now and in the dim dusk light plenty of people still lined boardwalks along the cliff edge and watched the sea in awe. Waves were massive here too but more protected from the wind.
BBC York had been very excited about the possible storm surge. all day. They sent a reporter who was talking about dramatic scenes in Scarborough. An army guy kept appearing on the radio saying 400 of his men were “equipped and ready to push forward” and that his “men are battle trained”, all this in a heroic military voice. At the battle field, means at Scarborough, the surge turned out to be impressive but far from dramatic.
The surge wobbled in, splashed a bit about the low part of the sea boulevard at South Bay against with flood barriers well protected windows and doors and washed some sand onto the street. Further down in front of the Spa, the waves did some freakish things in the backwash before they crashed with a lot of force onto the see wall of the promenade.
