At the bay I found out that it wasn´t just sunny but that also the wind had backed off und now was a light north. The rain must have stopped just a few minutes ago because the grass and the leaves of the trees had that special brilliant green. The colours of the coastal woods, the cliffs and the sea alone were mind boggling. But what really blew me away were the waves, that wrapped around the point within this beautiful landscape. They hit the reef perfectly and broke without very little – if any at all – disturbance by the wind.

This was a change in the local weather patterns had obviously taken everybody by surprise. Whereas at the pumphouse a couple of surfers were out trying to surf the big but mostly closing out waves, the perfection at the point was void and stayed void. But the miracle did not last long. After about 15 minutes the wind picked up again and turned back north-northeast. This change in the wind resulted in boiling water and even the point had no change resisting this assault. For a while it managed to give the stirred up swell some rudimentary form but soon it had to surrender to the raging wind.

I returned to Scarborough and to my surprise South Bay was completely calm. Either the wind had changed again or I witnessed another micro-climate oddity. But there was not only little – but still freezing – wind, there was also barely any swell making it to the beach. No surfers were out but some sea kayaks were cruising along the shore. On a closer look, I realized that they were accompanying swimmers. On an even closer check, I saw that the swimmers were women. They did not wear any wetsuits but bikinis and bathing cups.
