As the weather stayed nasty I went into town to do some shopping. Besides some food I ended up getting some nice hiking shoes together with a bunch of warm socks for 40 pounds. Who said England is an expensive country? O.K., the Brexit referendum has helped with money exchange issues as long as you come from a Euro country.
Around noon I went searching again. First stop was Filey. This is a large bay sheltered from northerly winds by cliffs. But the part of the bay that gets protection from northerly winds is also cut off from northerly wind swells. Out at the point another reef sticks out into the North Sea. The current north swell was hitting this reef with spectacular explosions but did not manage to make the 90 degree bend necessary to reach the northern parts of the bay.
The central part of the bay in front of the beach promenade had some lines and a stiff side-offshore wind but either the tide was too high or the swell too weak or the wind too strong or all this together. The resulting waves barely reached a status that could be called surf-able. At the southern end of the promenade things looked better with some decent looking lefts. But just as I reached this part of the beach dark clouds brought heavy rain and a shift in the wind direction. The strong wind was now blowing side-onshore and vanished all hopes for a surf-able wave.
