I myself would definitely not paddle out here but I had enough “bravado” to leave the van and walk to the cliff edge to have a closer look. To be honest, I was a bit concerned about the guy out there. It was icy cold again and the hail did not make things easier out there in a raging North Sea.

Another shower of hail tortured the skin of my face. Heavy wind gusts were screaming across the bay. Just when the hail had eased off into a light rain and the wind calmed down a bit, the guy out at the point managed to catch a set wave and make the drop. The wave lined up good and he surfed it way into the inside. My respect grew even higher. This was a classy way to deal with these wild elements. It also relieved me to see the guy in the safer inside of the bay.

He stayed there for a while, obviously undecided if to paddle out again or finish the session. The wind had gone down but might increase any time again. In the end, he surfed a couple of the inside waves before quitting. Probably a wise decision.

I returned to Scarborough, took a quick stop on the South Cliffs to have an overlook on the bay in the last light of the day and then checked into the Boardshed hostel. I did not want to spend the evenings and nights in my van – the heating did not work – during the upcoming cold and unpleasant weather and had opted for more comfort and warm showers.
