All the reefs in the area were firing but nobody was out (check this gallery for more impressions). I had no experience with the certain breaks, all I knew that there were half submerged rocks all over the place. Currents were likely and the swell had juice. So I asked myself the same question as the old man with his boat a bit further down the beach: should I go out? And if yes, where?
I decided to have another look at the little peninsula where I had breakfast this morning. Meanwhile it had got so warm that I had to change into shorts and t-shirt, before I walked to check the beach.
What I saw made me head back to the van as quick as possible, get into the 4-3 wetsuit and grab my longboard. The Baltic Sea was almost glassy and on offer were the left point, the right in front of the “harbour” and a soft peak in the middle of the bay. I opted for the right and used the “harbour” entrance to paddle out without having to bother with submerged rocks.
But the swell was already too inconsistent for the right so I paddled over to the centre peak. There I had the choice between shorter lefts and longer rights and had it all for myself in now glassy conditions under the warm lights of the setting sun with a beautiful panorama and had a nice and relaxing longboard session. At the end I took the last wave in, managed the slalom around the rocks near shore without touching them and walked back to my van with a big grin. It was a great day at the Baltic Sea, but the swell was clearly vanishing now and it started to rain just after sunset. Time to change coasts.
