Saksun

This is one of the “must see” places on Streymoy. The access (by car) across the island through a valley resembling Scottish Highlands a lot is already a beautiful drive. At the end of the road there are two small parking, one with direct access down to the fjord and one in front of the village overlooking the fjord.

The fjord is framed by high mountains and forms a spectacular scenery with the black rocks, green hill flanks, two beautiful waterfalls and the waters of the fjord. The open ocean is not visible from the end of the fjord and one could easily mistake it for a lake. To get ocean view you have to climb the surrounding mountains or walk along the sandbars of the fjord (only possible at low tides, so time your walk carefully if you don´t want to swim back) to the ocean facing beach.

Hiking is obviously the thing to do here. The about half an hour hike up the steep mountain flanks of the fjord are well worth the effort and the reward is a fantastic panorama. Hikes can also be combined with other areas as for example the path to Tjornuvik on the north coast.

The carefully restored grass-roofed buildings ant the old church give a good impression about how people used to live here and melt with the landscape into a very scenic picture.
