Hraunsvik

Just east of Grindavik a small peninsula points out to the sea like a thick finger. Like most of the coastline in the area it was created by lava streams coming from the Reykjanes volcano who stays silent since the middle ages but only is asleep. On the Hraunsvik peninsula lay a small harbour and fishing town which was flooded with lava during a smaller eruption a few centuries ago. Remnants of the harbour and some buildings can still be seen on the east side of the peninsula.

The east side of the peninsula bordering the Hraunsvik bay consists of many little points and bays and reefs. The southern and western coast of the peninsula is very exposed to North Atlantic storms and regularly gets pounded by enormous waves. It is a notorious graveyard for ships which got in trouble while trying to enter the Grindavik harbour. Rusty steel wrecks and information panels along the western coastline remind visitors off the enormous forces of nature regularly displaying their destructive powers here.

There is a gravel road running around the peninsula but due to its small size it can also easily be explored by an hour-long hike.
