Krysovikurberg

About two kilometres west of the junction of the 427 and the 42 roads a rough dirt tracks takes off the coast road and runs through a lava plain until it reaches the coast here consisting of high cliffs. The track then turns east, passes a river on a ford – be careful about water depth when not driving with a off-road car – and winds up a steep ascent to a parking at the Krysovikurberg mountain.

The mountain gives a nice overview on the area but the interesting part of the mountain, the high and steep dropping vertically to the sea are better viewed from below. So, it´s better to park the car in front of the ford – there are a few, sometimes muddy parking places here – and walk over to the cliff edge. Be careful and don’t get too close to the cliff edge especially during rough and windy weather.

From the cliff edge you have a good view on the vertical black lava walls which during summer are full of breeding birds. Stay on the foot paths as some bird species breed just at the cliff edge.

The whole area is a nice combination of landscape and animal life and allows for extensive hikes.
