Selatangar

About 15 kilometres east of Grindavik a dirt track takes off from the 427 and winds through vast lava fields to the coast. The lava field is not very thick and dives into the sea in a rugged coastline consisting of many little points and bays, a few beaches and some low cliffs. Access to the sea is easy for Icelandic standards and the many bays provide comparable safe anchor and landing places for small boats.

The area has been a place for fishermen since a few centuries and Selatangar was a typical fishing station with huts built from lava rocks and some lava caves used as storage rooms and workshops. Nowadays there are about 20 ruins of the huts left which are barely distinguishable from the surrounding lava fields from a far. The site is developed with some foot paths and information panels.

The huts are nice to see but not very spectacular. But the combination of the barren yet fascinating lava field meeting the sea at a rugged coastline with plenty of points and little bays makes this place worth a visit. And the huts give at least a hint how life on the island has been in past.
