Ajaccio, the capital of the island, is one of the few places at the west coast that make it easy to set sail due to the large bay. And with setting sail we mean any kind of sails, be it for sailboats, windsurfers or kite-boarders. Surfers might also like the area as the south facing coast from Ajaccio to the cape in front of Iles Sanguinaires has some interesting setups and north of the mountain ridge the beaches at Capo di Feno impress not only with the sheer beauty of the landscape but with the odd nice wave too. The number of local surfers and their skill levels give a good indication about the surf potential of the area.
The town itself is rich in culture and history and very worth a visit. Founded in 1492 by the Genoese, it took a few centuries until the town got some importance. Napoleon Bonaparte was born here and since 1982 the “Assemblée de Corse” (regional parliament of Corsica) is hosted here. Ajaccio has the largest airport of the island and, behind Bastia, the second most important harbour. Ferry connections from / to Marseille, Toulon and Nice are serviced year-round here.
