Capbreton / La Piste:
A long time ago this used to be a nice little town. Now it´s a nice little town center, surrounded by numerous new houses, built for holliday makers. Most of these buildings don´t have any style and are ampty outside the tourist season. Anyhow, plenty of people seem to like it and come here in summer to overcrowd the sandy beaches of the area.
The old town center has adopted to the tourist character of Capbreton too and mainly offers more or less usefull shops, the odd café and plenty of restaurants. A little bit outside you´ll find large supermarkets where you get everything you need.
For accomodation there´s plenty of rental appartements and houses. Just make sure to book them early when you want to come in summer. At La Piste there is a large camping car parking where you can stay overnight for a couple of days for not too much money. A local bakery sends a car full of croisants and baguettes to this parking every morning so you don´t even have to move to town for breakfast. Only downside of this camping car parking is that toilet facilites are very small, which can use in major problems during summer months, when the beach is full of sun seaking tourist.
The beach itself is a stretch of fine sand betwenn the sea and the dunes that gets very narrow on high tide.
The beaches at Capbreton are dominated by some bunkers and a couple of jetties. These jetties make the place still surfable when its big and blown out but give the place less swell.
La Piste / VVF is Mickey picons playground, the waves come to shore unhindered and unload their full power on the sandbars. This is bad for summer tourists without care who have to be rescued by lifesavers on a regular basis and good for surfers who know how to handle a steep drop and find a way out of fast tubes. On the good days this is tubes without end but also big crowds. But if you´re willing to make a little walk down the beach you´ll find a wave for yourself.
