[Lista Peninsula] [Varnes gallery]

Varnes

The northern coast of the Lista peninsula borders the Fedafjorden which cuts inland for about 12 kilometres. At the north-western tip of the peninsula, the Varnes cape marks the entrance into the fjord. The coastline is rugged here, with high cliffs that allow brilliant views onto the fjord and the adjacent Hidra island. Access to this fantastic landscape is fairly easy “thanks” to German WWII fortress madness. To control the entrance into the fjord they build – over a time span of several years – bunkers and gun posts into the cliff and to get there a road was carved into the hilly and rocky hinterland which leads to a tunnel that runs through the sea-side hill to the cliff bordering the fjord and to the bunkers. Russian POWs were forced to do the hard building work.

Nowadays you can drive – or better cycle – along that road to a parking close to the fort and hike down to it and along the cliffs to the lighthouse at the outermost tip of the headland. The inland woods are moss-covered and abundantly green and the path along the cliffs has fantastic views on a beautiful landscape. The hike to the lighthouse can be prolonged via a path along the west coast all the way to the Lista lighthouse (or the other way round). Sufficient shape provided you can also ride your bicycle starting from the Lista lighthouse via the Vita Velo – a signposted bicycle route that runs through beautiful landscapes along the coast and through the hilly inland but has a few uphills on the way.

For more impressions check the galley.
