Eigerøya and Midbrødøya

These two islands build the base for a mindboggling archipelago at the south-western tip of Norway. The whole area is dominated by the lower extensions of the large granite massif running along Norway’s northwest coast up to the polar circle. Even though at this part the rocks can barely be counted as mountains as they only reach heights of around 300 meters, they build a fascinating labyrinth of rocks, lakes and fjords.

The islands Eigerøya and Midbrødøya are separated by a deep but narrow fjord from the mainland and at first sight are barely recognizable as islands at all. Coming from Egersund you drive over a bridge crossing waters that are barely distinguishable from the lakes a bit further inland, pass a rock mountain via a tunnel and drive along a ridge with beautiful view on the fjord to the north until you reach another hill top. From up here you can see the open North Sea and the brilliant panorama of the lower parts of Eigerøya plus Midbrødøya.

The road then drops down and runs along a narrow isthmus with a nice sandy beach in a sheltered south facing bay and then reaches into the archipelago consisting of a wider extension of Eigerøya and Midbrødøya. To get to Midbrødøya.you have to follow a very narrow (not suited for camping cars) dead end road that ends down at the fjord separating the two islands. Park your car here and walk over a small bridge – the fjord here has only a few meters of width – and follow the gravel path leading to the southern end of the island and to the lighthouse.

The island is a fantastic mix of round rocks of all sizes, grass covered hills, a few trees and the quiet waters of the sheltered bays of the fjord. The whole landscape composition is absolutely stunning even in bad weather and a feast of colours and forms in the light of a low standing sun. Absolutely worth the visit.
